What Great Leaders Do Differently—Lessons from the Best

Monday, March 03, 2025

I’ve had the privilege of speaking with some of the most successful leaders in business, and one thing is clear: the best leaders never assume they’re great—they make sure their teams feel it.

A senior executive once told me about a challenge his company faced:

🚨 They were losing top performers at an alarming rate. Not to competitors. Not for more money. But because employees felt unheard, undervalued, and stuck.

He sat down with his leadership team, dug deep into exit interviews, and realized something powerful:

🔹 People don’t leave companies—they leave managers.
🔹 A title makes you a manager. But trust makes you a leader.

So, what did he do? He made key shifts that changed everything. Here are the three I hear most often from top leaders that have made all the difference.

3 Lessons from High-Level Leaders on Retaining Top Talent

✅ 1. They Listen—Really Listen

One of the most respected CEOs I know once said, “The minute you stop listening, you start losing.”

Great leaders don’t just hear their people—they make them feel heard. And that’s a game-changer.

🔹 One simple habit: Ask your best employees, “What’s one thing I can do to support you better?” Then act on it.

✅ 2. They Recognize & Celebrate the Right Things

A VP of Talent I spoke with made a small but powerful shift in his management style:

Instead of waiting for annual reviews, he started publicly recognizing contributions every week. And the result?

📈 Higher engagement, stronger loyalty, and a team that actually looked forward to coming to work.

🔹 One simple habit: Every Friday, take 5 minutes to highlight a team member’s impact. Small acknowledgments create lasting loyalty.

✅ 3. They Develop, Not Just Manage

Another executive told me, “People don’t stay where they don’t grow.

The best leaders don’t just give orders—they build careers. If your top performers feel stagnant, they’ll find a leader who challenges them.

🔹 One simple habit: Ask your team, “What skills do you want to build this year?” Then help them get there.

Great Leadership is a Choice

Every leader I’ve ever admired had one thing in common: They never assumed they were great—they always worked to become better.

So here’s a question worth asking: If your team had the choice, would they follow you?
