I used to think recruiting was about finding the perfect match—

The best resume.
The most polished credentials.
The safest choice.

And honestly—it made sense. If a candidate checked every box, they should be a great hire... right?

But time and experience have a way of teaching you things you never expected.

Because I watched some of those "perfect" hires struggle, stall, or leave within a year.

And then I watched some of the least obvious hires—the ones who weren’t the top choice on paper—absolutely crush it.

That’s when I realized something huge:
